What humans are able to physically see represents only a minute fraction of the electromagnetic spectrum. But given the proper means, the invisible can become visible. (Im)materiel, guest curated by Kevin B. Chen, includes photographs, sculptures, and video installations by 18 artists whose work surveys the slippery line that divides the known/unknown, tangible/intangible, and terrestrial/extramundane.

Temporal Void
Featuring: Mayumi Hamanaka + Brooks Salzwedel

Johansson Projects presents Temporal Void, a two person show featuring new works by Mayumi Hamanaka and Brooks Salzwedel, in which the vulnerability of our environments, histories and memories is brought to the forefront.

By slightly distorting recognizable images from twentieth century wars and layering hand cut prints and paper, Mayumi Hamanaka investigates perceptions of history and the contexts in which histories are written. In Hamanaka’s latest project, Invisible Lands, her process is applied to photographs found in the aftermath of the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Using these photographs Hamanaka re-imagines and recreates the memories and histories of people, places and moments that have been lost in an instance. Brooks Salzwedel’s work evokes the fragility of our environments, natural and unnatural, often by showcasing the junction of urban development and natural landscapes. These works simultaneously display the transition between unnatural encroachments on the natural and natural reclamation of environments. Salzwedel’s graphite, colored pencil, and mylar works are cast in resin. The resulting serene yet eerie landscapes are full of depth.

The exhibition I am putting together is opening this Thursday, Oct 17, 2013. Opening Reception 6-8pm at Kala Art Institute.

Kala Gallery is proud to present The Making is A Re-Making, a group exhibition that presents work by artists who use materials from everyday life to generate new worlds. Objects, spaces or experiences can be used to create new worlds from old ones, transformed via new arrangements, compositions, re-purposing or other experimental methods creating an experience of unexpected and magical perceptional shifts.

Swarm Gallery is pleased to present, aboveground, an exhibition of new work by Mayumi Hamanaka on view from March 5 – April 10, 2011. The artist’s first solo show with Swarm Gallery features large-scale photo-based cut-out images and photography.

Growing up in the climate of rapid economical growth and globalization, Mayumi Hamanaka’s art practice has followed concepts of individualism, mass-circulated trends, personal histories/memories buried within historical events, and power struggles of individuals within group dynamics.

aboveground explores the connection between historical events overseas and the present day where we stand. As written in Night and Fog, there are reverberating effects of past incidents over time and place, affecting more people than realized. Using recognizable source images collected from 20th Century wars such as WWI, WWII and the Vietnam War, Mayumi hand cuts and slightly abstracts them. By this action, she examines her own distorted perspective and experience in the context of how history is written, and invites the viewer to do the same. Re-imagining the past, we come up with a more accurate picture of the present.
