Mayumi Hamanaka

Mayumi Hamanaka is a photographer and installation artist. Originally from Japan, her work often uses photographs and references to examine historical events and individual memories & stories embedded in those events. She uses a subtle process of cutting topographies and structures into photographs. Hamanaka received her MFA from California College of the Arts, San Francisco. She has taught photography at California College of the Arts, Berkeley City College and Diablo Valley College. Her work has been exhibited at numerous venues including, de Young Museum San Francisco; Headlands Center for the Arts, Sausalito; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; Intersection for the Arts, San Francisco; Taipei Artist Village, Taipei; San Francisco Art Commission Gallery; Johansson Projects, Oakland; Asian American Art Centre, NY; Middlesex County College, NJ. She is a recipient of various awards including artist fellowship from de Young Museum, San Francisco, residency awards from Djerassi Residency Artists Program, CA, Santa Fe Art Institute, NM, and Taipei Artist Village, Taiwan.
